Novembre 11, 2024 Amigurumi for newborns – Safety ⚠️ Do you know the rules to guarantee the safety of the amigurumi made for newborns? If you are a mother, a father or have nephews you certainly know that in the first months of their life children need a million cautions. Some of them are obvious, others would have never come to your mind if someone hadn’t told you. Or if you didn’t read it in that book, in case you are doing everything on your own, as we did. In the case of amigurumi (and peluches) there are a few important ones that I want to talk to you about. Callisto the centaur can stand by herself, thanks to her 4 legs. Yarn: Some yarns have the “baby” indication on their label and are made for blankets and dolls. As I already told you in my previous articles in my opinion cotton yarn is the best choice for newborns, for some reasons. It is a natural material and prevents irritations on their delicate skin and usually the tinting is all natural and non-allergic. It is a very fresh material (very important point since babies tend to be always hot), and the result is an amigurumi that is soft but also stable and resistant. For example, wool can be ripped much easier than cotton. And, last but not least, cotton can be machine washed, the Domigurumi one until 40°C! (You can find it here) Inner cushion by Ikea Stuffing: In the article “Amigurumi – Best materials and where to find them” I told you about the Ikea cushion technique. I found out about this in another blog and I think it is the best choice. The prices for stuffing bags are high and cushions are economic but also non allergic and can be machine washed until high temperatures. Safety eyes, you can find them on Amazon here Safety eyes or embroidered ones: Safety eyes are made in plastic and must be fixed inside the head of the amigurumi with the brown pieces that they come with. Once they are fixed they should be safe and shouldn’t come off, unless you cut the back part. I personally use them but only if the amigurumi is for grown ups, because you never know what a newborn can swallow. Products can always be faulty and I want my amigurumi to be safe for children. I suggest you to do the same! I also suggest to avoid tiny shoes or accessories that can come off when the amigurumi is for newborns, together with fringes and long strands of yarn (it’s better to crochet the hair). Always make a research to know what the law in your country wants you to do before selling toys, in Europe we must have the CE mark on the label, that states that toys are safe and suitable for children. You can’t just print the label, you need an agency that must test your toys and certificate if they are safe or not. This keeps the customer safe, but also the seller. Imagine what can happen if some kid swallows a faulty safety eye! I hope that my article has given you useful informations, always remember that you can leave a comment down here.
